According to mythological belief, Mai Ka Madwa is the same place where the marriage of Mother Narmada and Sonbhadra was about to take place, for which all kinds of preparations had been made here. Here in Madwa of Mai, there are many such shapes carved on the rocks which are considered to be in the form of drums and balls of dough. Although they may look like stones, the belief says that this was a preparation for a wedding. There are 2 ponds built here which are called Handi Kundi.

According to folklore, these were the dowry given to Mother Narmada. When mother Narmada’s father King Makhal fixed the marriage of Princess Narmada and Prince Sonbhadra, the princess wished to see him at least once. For this, she sent her friend Juhila to the prince with her message. But a lot of time passed and Juhila did not return. After this the princess started getting worried and went in search of him. Then she reached Sonbhadra and saw Juhila with him. Seeing this he became very angry. Only after this, she took a vow to remain a virgin for life and moved in the opposite direction, it is said that from then onwards Narmada joined the Arabian Sea, whereas if we talk about other rivers, all the rivers meet in the Bay of Bengal.
